A cold room fails at its weak points long before its average performance drops: a damaged panel joint, a door seal, a penetration for piping. Warm humid air that reaches a cold surface condenses and then freezes, so frost is not a cosmetic issue, it is a map of where the envelope is broken. The vapour control layer sits on the warm side, and its continuity matters as much as the thickness of the insulation itself.

When it applies
- Frost or condensation is appearing on the envelope
- Panels, joints or door surrounds are damaged
- Refrigeration is compensating for an envelope problem
When something else comes first
- The refrigeration equipment itself is failing, which is a mechanical scope
- A control or defrost setting is the cause, which is worth checking before any construction
Envelope work will not compensate for undersized or failing refrigeration. If the assessment points to the equipment, we say so, because insulating around a mechanical problem only delays it.

Can the room stay in service during the work?
Sometimes in phases, sometimes not. It depends on the temperature you have to hold and on how much of the envelope is open at once — we tell you plainly which one applies.
Why does the vapour barrier matter more in a cold room?
The moisture drive is constant and runs one way, from the warm humid side toward the cold one. A gap in the barrier does not just lose energy, it puts water inside the assembly.
What causes frost on a cold-room ceiling?
Warm humid air reaching a cold surface, usually through a break in the envelope or a poorly sealed penetration. Finding that break is the first part of the job.
